To understand the concept, we must go back very far in 1904. The Gillette Company launched its first blade. It was a double-edged sword and throwing blade so unique that it was very flexible. In order to firmly secure the blade to the shaver structure, it was necessary to pass it through a screw mechanism.
Three holes were drilled on the blade while a threaded rod was developed on the razor cap with two studs aligned with the three holes of the blade. And that's how the blade was placed successfully and firmly in the razor.
Why there is Gap in Blade?
It was a simple blade pierced with three holes. But the modern blades are slightly different. The reason for a result so different from the conventional blade was due to the cold patent battle between inventor Henry J. Gaisman and Gillette Company. After marketing the three-hole blades, Gillette patented it for the next 25 years, which prevented many companies from producing such blades. After May 1921, when the patent expired, many companies started to produce blades.

Henry J. Gaisman founded Probak Corp. as a division of its AutoStrop Safety Razor Co. and began manufacturing blades. But there was a smart gesture. He created blades adapted to Gillette's razors. At the same time, he also created razors that would not accept Gillette's blades. The structure of Probak's razor was very different from that of Gillette's razor.
The cap included a pair of depressions accepting crampons of various shapes that were only on Probak's guard. In addition, to bring more complexity, the alignment pins of the corner blades mounted on the cap were nested in the depressions of the protection. To be able to insert the blade, it had to have openings correctly placed to receive the projections and the corner pins.
This new design has become a serious problem for Gillette and, to meet such challenges, it has developed NEW GILLETTE blades. The old three-hole blades would not fit in the new NEW GILLETTE shaver, but the new design and new patented blade would continue to work in all older Gillette shavers.
And in order to reveal new combinations of blades and razors, the evolution of the blades continued with a change of design. Patent fights continued, and finally, the design of the final accepted blade that accepted the entire razor was ready.

Another reason for this engraving hole (not so special design) on the blades may be due to the fact that the first prepared blade was barely 0.20 mm thick and was made of chromed steel. In order to keep the edges sharp for a long time, it has been heat-treated by quenching and this heat treatment has made the material hard and brittle. This led to the breaking of the material when someone tried to deform it, even slightly. The engraving of the hole should, therefore, offer flexibility without breaking. It gave stability and flexibility.
