In 1915, John Hertz, a Chicago entrepreneur, opened the yellow cab company in his hometown. To unify his fleet, Hertz had commissioned a university study of the region to "scientifically verify that the yellow colour would stand out the strongest from a distance," according to his biographer and that the yellow would prevail.
(colour researchers still agree that yellow is the most visible colour, although some said it was a chartreuse colour that the attention simply detects.)

The story does not take into account the fact that countries with yellow taxis had already appeared in many cities in Germany before 1915.
