why do bottles have a concave bottom

Have you ever noticed an indentation at the bottom of wine bottles and jars? Today, even normal mineral water bottles have it? This seemingly useless dent is not just a feature of the design, it also has functional goals.

Do you remember when you balanced a bottle between your fingers? Well, that little bump worked hard to make sure the bottle did not fall. But have you ever thought, if there are more reasons why most wine bottles have a bump at the bottom?

  1. It is easier for you to hold the bottle. The dent acts as a place where you can place your palm or thumb and use the other fingers to wrap the base.
  2. It gives an optical illusion to your eyes, making you think that the bottle is larger than the standard size.
  3. It adds resistance to the base of the bottles and jars, preventing them from breaking due to the high pressure in which the wine is kept. It also keeps the contents intact and fresh.
  4. It helps deposit sediment around the circumference of the bump in the bottle, thus preventing the deposit from mixing with the contents. This explains why expensive jams and wine bottles have deeper indents than cheaper ones.
  5. Cleaning the bottle is simplified because the water can easily spread around the bottle evenly.
  6. It increases the contact surface between the contents, like wine and ice, thus keeping the drink cool. Wine bottles are normally stored in ice buckets and a better ice contact surface allows the wine to cool more quickly and stay cooler.
  7. The traditional way of stacking bottles of wine is to keep the nose from one another, which is why they always have a small bump.
  8. It prevents the bottle from resonating, preventing it from breaking during transportation or shipping.
  9. Unlike a flat-bottomed bottle, bumps prevent the bottle from overturning because it offers more stability.
