Why Prisoners are Asked for Last Meal
They are not.
People sentenced to a Death punishment (before hanging) have given the choice of ordering the last meal ... but even that is subject to rules and they may not get exactly what they asked for.
This seems to have originated in the need for the convicted person to abide by a minimum protocol of semi-conformation in order to avoid that the execution becomes a public disaster (at the time when the executions were public).
Jailors usually managed to get the condemned pretty damned near falling down drunk as part of the last meal, so the process of getting them to the gibbet/gallows/stake went smoothly and put on a good show.

They are also given the chance for the last words, which are recorded for posterity. Theoretically, it can be hoped that this gives the convict a final chance to apologize or to be free of conscience before the sentence is served ... and usually, it works, but not always.
Every Prisoner in this world who is sentenced to death is asked for his favorite last meal. The reason behind it is not to fulfill the last wish of the prisoners, but to bribe the ghost / Spirit of the prisoner so that it does not haunt the executioners, police, or judge.
