How did all these people get these surnames? In fact, how did you get your last name? Have you ever wondered about this?
Your last name may come from your parents. But where did they find it? If you keep going back in time, your last name had to start somewhere, right? So how did it work?
How Surnames Came About
Many modern American surnames also called last names to date back to medieval Europe. This is because when the Europeans colonized North America, they brought their last name with them.
In the middle Ages, most Europeans lived in small villages separated by large areas of agricultural land. People rarely met those from other villages. Everyone knew everyone in their village, so there was no real need for surnames.
Why do we have Surnames
Over time, however, villages and populations have increased. People were traveling more. They traded with other places. Soon they needed a way to tell the difference between people of the same name. Surnames started as a way of separating one "Michel" from another "Michel".

Surnames had many sources. However, they can be classified into four groups:
- Patronymic
- Location
- Professional or status and
- Nicknames.
The reasons behind the first surnames were quite simple. They have become more diverse and complex over the years.
The surnames identify people as the children of their fathers. For example, a father named Richard could have a daughter named Brooke. She could have become known as Brooke Richards.
Location surnames identify people based on their place of birth, life, or work. For example, Sara America was probably Sara who lived in the city of America. Probably got their names from references where they lived.
Profession or status names were also common. They were based on employment or social status. Andrea Baker was probably Andrea in the village who was a baker. Robert Knight could have chosen his last name to reflect his social position as a knight.
Other common surnames were based on nicknames. These are usually words that describe a person in one way or another. These may have been based on size (long, short, small) or a personality characteristic (strong, severe, joyful).
Of course, surnames are used differently in many parts of the world.
In much of Asia and Africa, the last name is not called the "surname". This is because it usually comes first when written or spoken, before the first name. Chinese surnames were also originally passed down by mothers; this changed for fathers in the 17th century.
Where does your family name come from? Could it be a distant ancestral occupation? Maybe that tells you what your great-great-great-great-grandparents looked like! Today, some people even create their own surnames based on their personality or beliefs. Whatever your last name, there is definitely a story behind it.
