Why do Plant Roots Grow Down

Roots:- Roots grow because the root reacts to gravity by releasing chemicals that prevent growth on the lower side, thus turning the root down.

The roots of plants are geotropic positive and phototropic negative. As a result, they will avoid light and grow to gravity in the soil. In addition, plant roots grow to find water and minerals.

Why do Plant Shoots Grow Upwards

Shoots:- The shoots grow up towards the sun. The growing tip of the shoot can detect the direction of light, and chemicals are released that make it grow further on the lower or darker side, thus turning the shoot up

If you look at the sprouting process, it is the coleorhiza or root tip that first emerges from the seed and gravity-based grows down.

This is how a seed determines which path is "up" by basically finding which way is "down".

Later, the coleoptile will lengthen and raise the cotyledons above the ground where they will become green during sun exposure and begin photosynthesis.

This is crucial because the food stored in the cotyledons will soon disappear and the plant may starve if there is no sun.
